Cold Feet at Home: What Really Helps
It is cold outside, the heating is on inside, and yet your feet are icy. Many people know this problem as soon as temperatures drop. The good news: in most cases there is no mystery behind it, just the floor, the wrong house shoes or simply too little movement. We show what really helps against cold feet at home.
Why feet get cold so quickly at home
The feet are furthest from the body's core and are the first to receive less blood flow in the cold. The body protects the internal organs first and reduces the supply to hands and feet. At home, a second factor comes into play: tiles, stone and laminate conduct heat very well. Anyone standing on them in socks or thin slippers constantly loses warmth to the floor through the soles of the feet.
A third reason is sitting. If you sit on the sofa or at a desk for a long time in the evening, your feet hardly move, and without movement the blood flow stays low. All three causes can be influenced well at home.
The floor is the biggest heat thief
The most important step is an insulating layer between foot and floor. That is exactly what felt house shoes do: wool felt traps air, and this air keeps the cold from below away. Models with a felt sole are especially quiet on parquet, models with an EVA outsole give extra grip on smooth tiles.
If you want it even warmer, place a felt insole in your house shoe. Five to six millimetres of additional felt noticeably strengthen the insulation and refresh a worn sole. The principle is the same as a sleeping mat when camping: it is not the blanket on top that matters most, but the layer underneath.
The right house shoes for cold days
- Ankle-high models: they also enclose the ankle area and keep the warmth in the shoe longer.
- Closed house shoes such as Walker models: heel and foot are wrapped all around, cold air does not reach the foot.
- Felt slippers: for everyone who wants to slip in quickly. With an insole, they too become noticeably warmer.
The fit is important. A house shoe that is too tight presses and slows the blood flow, one that is too big lets cold air reach the foot. If a pair fits slightly loosely, an insole makes up for it.
Simple habits that work immediately
- Move your feet: curl and stretch your toes repeatedly while sitting, and get up briefly every half hour.
- Wool socks instead of cotton: wool still warms even when slightly damp.
- A warm foot bath in the evening: five to ten minutes are enough, then dry well and straight into the house shoes.
- Do not lace too tightly: tight socks, cuffs or shoes restrict blood flow.
- Keep house shoes dry: damp felt insulates less well, so let the shoes air out after wearing.
When cold feet are a case for the doctor
Cold feet in winter are usually harmless and disappear with warmth and movement. However, if the feet remain permanently cold even in a warm environment, look pale or bluish, or are accompanied by numbness and pain, you should have this checked by a doctor. A circulation problem or another cause may be behind it that cannot be solved with house shoes alone.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have cold feet at home despite the heating?
Usually it is the floor. Tiles, stone and laminate constantly draw warmth through the soles of the feet, even when the room air is warm. An insulating layer of felt between foot and floor solves the problem in most cases.
Which house shoes are the warmest?
Closed and ankle-high models made of wool felt keep the warmth in the shoe best. With an additional felt insole, every model becomes noticeably warmer again.
Do insoles really help against cold feet?
Yes. A five to six millimetre thick felt sole insulates against the cold from below and cushions every step at the same time. The difference is immediately noticeable, especially on tiles and stone floors.
Are wool socks or house shoes better against cold feet?
Both together is best. Wool socks warm the foot, but only a house shoe with a felt sole really keeps the cold of the floor away.
When should I see a doctor about cold feet?
If the feet remain permanently cold even in a warm environment, change colour, or numbness and pain occur. Then the cause should be checked by a doctor.
